The Journey

The personal side of Chinese Motorcycle Review — where this whole thing came from, and why Chinese bikes have been part of my life for over twenty years.

About Chinese Motorcycle Review

Phillip and a friend on scooters, helmets on

I'm Phillip, and I run Chinese Motorcycle Review out of Savannah, Georgia. By day I'm a working automotive locksmith. The rest of the time, I'm the same guy I've been since I was 10 years old — somebody who just wants to ride.

My first bike was a 1987 Honda Spree that I kept running with parts off two more Sprees my dad pulled out of the local dump. In 2002 my dad went all in, importing 40-foot containers of Geely scooters and parts straight from the factory, and in 2003 he opened our family shop, Scooter World, which I ran for the next ten years. Later I opened my own shop, Savannah Scooter Worx. Along the way I sold Chinese bikes, fixed everybody else's Chinese bikes, and learned exactly what breaks, what lasts, and what the brochures don't tell you.

That's the perspective this site comes from. Chinese Motorcycle Review covers Chinese motorcycles honestly — the news, the reviews, and what it's actually like to own and wrench on these bikes. No hype and no cheap shots. The bikes from the top Chinese companies have come a long way, and the prices are still right — but I'll tell you when something isn't good enough, because I've been the guy standing between a customer and a bike that wasn't made to last.

I've always wanted to be a moto journalist. This site is me finally doing it, for myself — and hopefully helping you decide if a Chinese manufactured motorcycle is right for you.

Questions, tips, or a bike you want covered? Email me at [email protected], or find CMR on Facebook and YouTube.

40 foot container full of Geely scooters.

That's how it all started for us — in 2002 my dad went all in on a few 40 foot containers directly from Geely, full of mopeds and parts. This is my origin story.

Three Years Later title card

So it begins… again.

And we're back. After 3 years, something has pulled me back to this website to finish what I started — my son has taken an interest in riding again.

My intro blog.

Quarantine, an organized garage, a domain I'd been sitting on for a year — and a website I've always wanted to build. I've always wanted to be a moto journalist.
